For the 2024 year-end celebrations, La Relocation is launching a special project: an exclusive collection of artistic cards created by carefully selected emerging designers. Each year, a different designer will be invited to reinterpret the spirit of the festive season through their unique style.

Kicking off this initiative is Shunya Sugawara, a Japanese designer based in Milan, whose work blends the aesthetic tradition of Japan with a contemporary, cosmopolitan flair. His card celebrates the harmony between nature, tradition, and modernity—values that ideally unite Japan and Switzerland.

A card that tells a story

The illustration by Sugawara depicts a snowy landscape that evokes both the Swiss Alps and Japanese Zen gardens. The simplicity of the lines is complemented by a palette of natural and delicate colors, creating a serene and poetic scene.

“I wanted to capture the sense of peace and reflection that accompanies this season in both cultures. The winter period in Switzerland has a deep connection with nature, while in Japan, this season is seen as a time for reflection and gratitude.”

Shunya Sugawara

The connection between Japanese and Swiss design

The decision to launch the collection with a Japanese designer is no coincidence. Switzerland and Japan share a profound attention to detail, artisanal quality, and the appreciation of nature in creative processes.

Both traditions are rooted in principles of simplicity and elegance, making the meeting of these two design schools feel natural. In particular, Japan’s minimalist approach perfectly complements the formal rigor and functionality typical of Swiss design. This synergy has inspired numerous collaborations, and Sugawara’s card is a tangible example of this connection.

Collecting to celebrate art

Shunya Sugawara’s card is the first in a series that promises to become a true collection for design and creativity enthusiasts. Each year, a new designer will be invited to contribute their vision, making this initiative a highly anticipated event for those who appreciate art and beauty in everyday gestures.

A Conversation with the Artist

To delve deeper into the creative process and the inspiration behind this year’s seasonal card, we had the pleasure of speaking with Shunya Sugawara. He shared his thoughts on the project, his cultural influences, and his personal journey.

How did you feel about La Relocation’s invitation to participate in this project?
I was honored to be chosen as the first designer for this initiative. The idea of creating a cultural bridge through something as simple yet meaningful as a card is extraordinary.

Which elements of Japanese culture did you aim to incorporate into your illustration?

I sought to bring my interpretation of wabi-sabi—the aesthetics of imperfect beauty—into the design. The illustration I created for this project applies the techniques of Japanese painting, characterized by a composition that emphasizes negative space. It is drawn with simple paths, using flat layers. The snow, branches, and mountains represent the simplicity and serenity of nature.
I also paid close attention to the paper used for printing. By selecting a special textured paper with a bumpy surface, the print develops a subtle variation. This creates an effect that feels as though snow is gently falling on the surface of a card.

Do you think there are points of connection between Swiss and Japanese culture in design?
Absolutely. Both cultures appreciate precision, attention to detail, and a connection to the natural environment. I tried to merge these values in my work for this card.

What message do you want to convey with this card?
I hope people take a moment to reflect on what truly matters: nature, family, and gratitude.

Why did you choose to move to Italy, specifically Milan? How was your experience with relocation and cultural integration?
Italy has always been a source of inspiration for me, with its rich artistic tradition and passion for design. Living in Milan allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. The relocation experience was stimulating: adapting to a new culture and language gave me fresh perspectives, a process that I believe aligns with what La Relocation offers its clients.

A message that unites

The 2024 seasonal card designed by Shunya Sugawara is much more than just a greeting: it symbolizes a connection between cultures, an expression of art, and an invitation to reflect. With this initiative, La Relocation celebrates the beauty of inclusion and diversity, fundamental values of its mission.

We look forward to discovering the next creative mind who will design our 2025 seasonal card. Stay tuned for updates!
